GHA is working on an eco-friendly hut system for Grand County. The proposed system will eventually go from Berthoud Pass all the way to Grand Lake. This consists of nine huts total and includes four existing huts – Second Creek Hut, First Creek Hut, High Lonesome Hut, and Twin Creek Hut – and five newly proposed huts. The Second Creek Hut is structurally unfit and will be rebuilt as the Broome Hut as the first construction project for GHA.
All funding for the first hut project must be in place in order to receive the final permit from the U.S. Forest Service. Once this permit is issued, building of the hut can begin. Help us reach our goal by donating today! Grand Huts Association is a Colorado 501c(3) non-profit organization and donations are tax deductible. Donations can be made online through the GHA Website.
In response to the comment by “Anti GHA”…
Grand Huts Association’s plans are a more eco-sensitve approach when compared to leaving the Berthoud Huts alone. We are building one hut on Berthoud to replace one that is condemned and will have to be removed no matter what.
Our “monster cabin” is actually not very large, is designed to blend with the surroundings, and is almost totally isolated from impacting the environment. Protecting this area from further environmental degradation is one of our primary goals, and has been thoroughly researched.
The First and Second Creek basins are heavily used. Human impacts to the area are proliferating and have degraded the natural environment. Grand Huts Association is addressing these impacts and – in conjunction with the US Forest Service – is taking steps to mitigate them. For example, we are providing a day use room and a bathroom attached to our composting toilet system, for public usage. This alone will reduce one of the biggest adverse environmental impacts in the area.
We have replaced a web of incidental trails through sensitive areas with one engineered trail which avoids these critical spots. Currently, the area is being indiscriminately “logged” to feed a wood burning stove, removing critical habitat for a variety of high alpine species. Our hut will not have a wood burning fireplace so that temptation will be removed.
Compared to the many huts and yurts in Colorado, the Broome Hut on Second Creek, being new and environmentally planned, will set a new standard for low impact. We welcome your participation in our project and encourage you to check out our website (grandhuts.org) and join us for a planning session or voluteer to help. We can always use help from people who care about the environment and eco-sensitive enjoyment of the backcountry.
The most eco-sensitive approach to the Berthoud area huts is to leave them alone. You guys are going to screw up the area with these monstrous cabins.
We added an update post this morning about some of the things that are in process with the site. Thanks for your support!
Guys were looking for a site at the old A frame yesterday.
Good luck with the project.
